IAS is one of the prestigious job of UPSC. UPSC conducts Examination with the name of Civil Servivce Examination which includes other services also i.e. IFS,IFoS,IRS,IPS,etc. In this It includes three stages i.e Preliminary, Mains & Interview.
It is the first step in the journey of civil services in which UPSC tests your knowledge of History, Indian Heritage & Culture, Political Science, Economics, Geography, Current Affairs & Science & Technology.
First question comes in mind that should I join any coaching institute or can I prepare through self study.
* Second question comes in mind how much time should i devote ?
* Third question arises, should I study from previous year papers or from referred books or from mock papers
Here I would like to answer to every question of you
There is no need to muggle any coaching institute. If you find many students got through but others of same institute fail in making final selection. So, where is the problem ?
Is there any faulty teaching of institute ?
Is there any source or something else ?
Answer would be NO, those students who are getting final seat in examination is due to only practice more & more. Also practice is possible if your doubts are cleared. It is not essential that all the questions of coaching institute will be asked in your final examination. Thus it needs hardwork by you not by others..Coaching institutes can give you only guidance regarding books , What to study & what to leave, etc. etc.
I) HOW TO PREPARE GENERAL KNOWLEDGE FOR PRELIMS ?
For preparation of general knowledge if you see many books are available in the market. Some books are based on previous solved year question papers. Some G.S. manuals are available.So, main thing is that nothing will be helpful without revision & revision is possible only if you have prepared notes.
II) HOW TO PREPARE FROM THE HINDU NEWSPAPER ?
Many of you have listened from many of aspirants that read only editorials.
So question arises,will it be sufficient for IAS PREPARATION ?
Answer would be NO.
For example if you see previous year paper of IAS i.e. IAS PRELIMS 2014.One question they have asked on Earth Day..so from where it has been lifted ?
This question has been lifted from "The Hindu" of 10th March 2014 from Bengaluru section.
It means UPSC can lift from any section not just only editorial.
So, If you are preparing for this year then just start preparation from October 2014 to July 2015 current affairs & make notes from all section.
Remember there is no need to go for that news whice has no importance for IAS.
For Ex.
* Reshuffling has taken place in Modi Government.
* Road accident took place in__ __.
etc. etc.
Just look at important news,which is related to climate change, Economic Policy,Environment like
* Earth Day
* Why Vultures are getting extinct
* Solar Panels ?
* Food Parks
This kind of current affairs you have to prepare from The Hindu newspaper just by going at every section
FOR MAINS PREPARARTION FROM THE HINDU NEWSPAPER
For mains also just go at their website & copy all the important articles which you are preparing for prelims.
III) HOW TO PREPARE NOTES ?
First look at previous year question papers of UPSC & make a list of topics subject wise. Then google all the topics & make notes or you can take NCERT books from class 7th to 12th & then also make the notes. Remember there is no need to study those topics which are not important for upsc. That’s why it is advised to go to 5 year’s back question papers.
IV) HOW TO PREPARE CSAT (GENERAL STUDIES-II) :
For preparation of CSAT first of all buy NCERT books from class 7th to 12th & then solve each exercise from the topics mentioned in the syllabus. If you see in 2013 most of the questions were from NCERT EXRCISES. In 2014 they have asked questions in CSAT from CISF, IES, CMS question papers. So you need to solve each & every question. Keeping in mind now we have included all these questions in our test series with explanations.
With all this you can buy any CSAT MANUAL available in the market for practice purpose. In this case also you have to prepare notes just like prepare one notebook of NCERT problems & one notebook of solved previous papers of upsc. In this way it will helpful to do revision.
One more thing for CSAT preparation there is no need to go to Vedic Maths because Vedic Maths is essential for Banking Examinations as in UPSC they don’t ask calculations but yes you should know simple shortcuts like for taking square root & addition & subtraction.
V) HOW TO PREPARE FOR MAINS ?
A) For Essay & English Preparation :
For the Essay section just make list of all the topics asked in all the UPSC examinations & then search it on google & collect important data on that topic & prepare important points, in this way you can prepare essay . For English Section also take any book for MAINS ENGLISH available in the market & solve previous year question papers & prepare in your separate file.
B) For G.S. I TO IV :
For this section also follow same strategy just like G.S. for prelims. After preparing notes for G.S. prelims just look at previous year questions asked in mains examination.If you have prepared notes then you can easily solve all the questions.In examination they play game of language..first just try to find the topic on which they have asked the question after then find what it is asking ?
And remember never exceed word limit. If you cross the word limit, according to many toppers they will not evaluate your that question.so always write in limit.
Always try to write in points & mention important points because in 200 words you have to write only that points which they have asked.
For mains Preparation also look at important issues from the Hindu newspaper & Government magazines like Yojana, Kurukshetra, etc.
As you all know they have included new paper in mains i.e. G.S. IV “ETHICS & INTEGRITY”. For this section many books have been published so just buy any good book from the market & prepare according to questions asked in previous years.
VI) FOR INTERVIEW PREPARATION :
For this step you need to cover all the questions arising from your biodata, you family, college, city & state. For Example questions based on industries, rivers flowing & politics of your state. Apart from that just look at the notes that you have prepared for mains examination. Also prepare notes on important current issues.
